Some climate activists accuse the industry of simply investing in carbon capture as way to extend the use of oil and gas. The technology typically uses chemical absorption to capture carbon dioxide emitted from the chimney of an industrial plant. "The economic viability of carbon capture and sequestration is a challenge today because the cost of building most plants in order to capture carbon dioxide are very significant," the executive said. About two-thirds of the industry's carbon dioxide emissions come from chemical reactions that occur when breaking down limestone. SLB this month announced a nearly $400 million investment in Aker Carbon Capture, a pure-play carbon capture company based in Norway, in an effort to accelerate deployment of the technology at commercial scale.

CNN —A Texas judge ruled Thursday that the state’s CROWN Act does not make it unlawful for school dress codes to limit a student’s hair length. The decision is a blow to Darryl George, a Houston-area high school student who sued his school district after he was suspended for months over the length of his locs hairstyle. The trial marks the conclusion to a monthslong legal battle between George and the Barbers Hill Independent School District. The district’s dress code allows students to wear locs hairstyles but places limits on the length of male student’s hair. “I’m nervous, but I’m happy.”Supporters of Darryl George hold signs during a protest outside of the home of Barbers Hill Independent School District superintendent Greg Poole on Wednesday, February, 22, 2024.

A Texas state senator said a Texas-based basic income plan will "hand out money like popcorn." State Sen. Paul Bettencourt asked the state attorney general to declare it unconstitutional. Bettencourt's request came on the same day that the program — called Uplift Harris — started taking applications. The Uplift Harris program plans to provide eligible households in Harris County, which includes Houston, $500 a month for up to 18 months. "We just can't hand out money like popcorn on street corners to people that walk by," Bettencourt told Fox.

The high cost of long linesLong lines for the restroom are what architects call a “friction point,” and, potentially, a costly one. The average price for a Super Bowl ticket is currently hovering around $9,800. So what’s the new science of stadium restrooms? Many theaters, airports and public buildings are famous for long lines around women’s restrooms but none by the men’s.

But unlike its coastal counterparts, Houston's homes are much cheaper and more abundant. Advertisement"It's really a way to limit housing construction," said Emily Hamilton, a housing researcher at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. She added that minimum lot sizes maintain "a homogenous type of housing construction with often a high floor on how expensive it has to be." The policy change has spurred the construction of almost 80,000 new homes, many of them townhouses and other kinds of small-lot single-family homes. But the massive success of Houston's minimum lot size reform is getting noticed across Texas and around the country.

A new estimate says the record summer heat in Texas cost the state's economy $24 billion. For every 1-degree increase in average summer temperature, Texas sees a 0.4% slowdown in its annual nominal GDP growth. Notable establishments like Schlitterbahn, SeaWorld, and Six Flags blamed their dips in summer visitors on the heat wave.
